Let's Pretend

Image
Today was a quite day at home. We did school work, went swimming, and got some things ready for our beach trip. During our money unit today we did some pretend shopping and used calculators to add up our purchases. They were given a Scholastic book order, Target, and Toys R Us sale ad. The directions were to choose 5 items they wanted to buy and to cut them out including the price. After they had done this we practiced using the calculator, they wrote down the prices, and then added them up.What was so funny was that they thought they were going to buy some of the things that they cut out. I tried to explain we were just pretending. Tonight Karly brought it up again. She was upset and said "Then why did I cut out those chapter books? I really wanted them." It was so cute and I am not sure they really understand now.

A long day....

Today started off way earlier than I would like at a little before 6am. Our refrigerator had leaked and there were several large puddles on our kitchen floor. After cleaning it up Allen and I enjoyed a cup of coffee and breakfast together. Next Karly came down to inform us that Shelby's neck was hurting and she couldn't move (she had a bad crick in her neck:). Then Coleman woke up and his diaper begin to literally leak puddles while Allen was holding him. This was all before 8 am! I said this is why I don't get up early, Ha!           Today for math we continued to look at coins and we made a timeline from the earliest penny we found (1967) to present day. Then we graphed the coins we found. This was good practice and opportunity to discuss how to read the year and how to look at a simple timeline. Next we chose a penny and determined if we were older or younger than our penny. Below are the girls writings about their penn...

Summer Learning Fun

Image
We have done school in little bits and pieces since the beginning of  June. This our first official year of homeschooling. For the past two years Shelby has been schooled from home with a Cyber Academy. This year she is beginning 2nd grade and Karly is beginning kindergarten! Hard to believe. I hope that this blog can be a journal of our journey in homeschooling and help us document our learning. So here it goes:) Today we began a math replacement unit about money. This is the book we are using Math by All Means: Money  . We observed different coins and noted their similarities and differences. We then recorded their dates and will discuss more about that tomorrow. The girls also began their new handwriting books: Handwriting for a Reason . Shelby is using the transition book and Karly is using level A. I think they are going to be great practice and I love they also incorporate a scripture each week. For Science this summer we are have 3 Little Lab experime...
